What is CHESS?

Clearing House Electronic Sub-Register System (CHESS)) is the computer system used by the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) to record the ownership of all domestic (Australian) shares on behalf of brokers, such as nabtrade.

Before being able to register ownership of shares on CHESS, an investor needs a Holder Identification Number (HIN).
